Topic Proposal Essay #2:

1.) The object I have chosen for my essay is the apple I-Phone.
2.) The surface message behind the object I have selected is to have everything you want or need right in the palm of your hand.
3.) Additional messages:
The Apple I-phone sends out an additional message that the owner is rich, or spoiled by their parents. It also sends out an additional message that the owner is technologically advanced, wants to have power and feel accepted by others.
4.) Features crucial to analysis:
The Apple I-phone gives the owner the ability to access the internet, talk on the phone, store videos, music, and pictures. It also gives the owner the ability to also check email. The I-phone has a touch screen that rotates when the phone is rotated. It has high-speed internet and a 2 year mandatory service plan starting at $59.99 a month. It only works with a AT&T service. The 8GB I-phone is currently $399.00 and the 16 GB I-phone is $499.00.
5.) The sleek touch-screen is an important design element that helps portray the messages. The Icons on the screen are colorful and easily accessible. The widescreen, proximity sensor, ambient light, and colorful icons all help portray the additional messages. The ability to store all of your favorite songs, videos, or pictures on the I-phone is also an important element in portraying the messages.
6.) The intended audience is someone who is busy, technologically advanced, and professional young adults. Teens who are spoiled or rich are also an intended audience.

Thesis: The Apple I-phone is a very popular item that seems to attract many teens or young adults through its sleek design and technological advancement. While through its expensive service plan and the cost of the phone its-self also discourages others.

  1. I like that you focused on the I phone. I think it's a very interesting thing to write about and you can tell a lot about the person who owns one. I like everything that you pointed about the phone and its users but I would make the thesis a little stronger and go in more depth about what I-phone tells about people and what they could be hiding.

  2. Brad, this is a good start. Consider the following things as you develop and organize your argument. You mentioned a good deal of the features I-Phone has and that it is an expensive tool. However, you need to place it against other competitors that are either in the same price range or in the same category as far s the features are concerned. What is the role of touch screen instead of buttons? What otherwise useful features does it lack? Is it as durable, small, visually appealing as other phones in that category? Is it considered stylish or cool? If a person owns one, what is the message for users of other models or brands? How long would it stay “in style”? What about the different options? How soon will they become outdated? Would you get a few years of use out of it or will you likely replace it after a couple of seasons? Would people 20-40 years older than you want to have a phone like this or would it be inappropriate for this group? Why? What is the role of Apple in the title?;-)
