Tony Harrison's "Cold Coming"

In this short story/poem the author uses birth in the form of storing semen and death in the form of soldiers and Iraqi's dying or, to the point of death, during the war.

The author focuses on sperm banking to portray the violence of war. The fact that so many soldiers banked their sperm while in the war tells you they don't plan on coming out of the war alive.

The Iraqi is taken to a poet because a poet can 'pretend that the man wants his foe to be his friend.'

I completely agree with the brith adn death symbols. Its sad to think that the soldiers had to go so far as to bank their sperm. This shows how bad the war really was and there wasnt much of a chance of survival.

I find it interesting that you would say the poet wants the man his foe to be his friend.

After finally realizing why soldiers bank their sperm, the thought of it makes me a little sad. Soldiers understand that there is a possibility that they will not come out alive.

The birth and death symbols is so true. Its crazy about the sperm banks, having the soldiers going into war knowing that they may not back it back.
